During the last month or so we've been doing loads of site maintenance for our clients. Websites need to be kept fresh so there's plenty of work. At some point aariviss will go through a refresh. It's just a matter of finding the time really.

I am looking forward to seeing more of Windows 8. I know it's unfashionable to be a fan of Microsoft but Win 7 is good, so hopefully Win 8 will be better. We keep our fingers crossed.

I watched Mark Zuckerberg's Keynote yesterday. I have to say that I like the direction Facebook is going with it's new Timeline.

Must go, lots to do. Hopefully the posts will be more regular.

The new client is Bramasolee Ragdoll Cats. They are breeders of Ragdoll Cats. The new website is at the build stage at the moment and we hope to go live next week, possibly Wednesday or Thursday, depending on whether the client likes what we have done. We'll let you know when it goes 'live'. By the way, Ragdoll cats get their name because they are very friendly and go limp when picked up, like a rag doll in fact.

Sorry this blog is late. Apart from the new site going live a couple of weeks ago we've been busy doing a fair amount of large scale maintenance for some of our other clients. It's been busy busy!

As has been previously mentioned, the new site was provided for an existing client who is in the process of changing the company name. We felt that a change is a good as a re-design. Which we duly supplied. Most of the content has remained the same, but not all. Eventually there will be an extra gallery page when we get the photos. The 'go-live' process was fairly straight forward. There were no major issues. Why not go and see for your self.

On a different tack, I see there have been a glut of hacks by various miscreants on various businesses (Plod included!). These companies (including Plod) just don't learn. One can't treat information security as some sort of secondary issue. It should be the top priority for obvious reasons. Don't get me wrong, I don't condone these hacks, but they have highlighted weaknesses in some companies' security standards. Hopefully, these organisations might actually start taking information security seriously. In statements to the press hacked companies trot out the same old tosh, "we take our security and the security of our clients information very seriously....". Not! If they took it seriously they wouldn't have had the problems they have had. Simples.

Oh well back to work.

One of our clients has changed the name of their company. Soon there will be a re-launch of their website. The re-design has been done. We are just waiting for some more content and the go-ahead to launch the new website.

15-05-2011 - Security of Personal Information

So yet another company has been more than careless with users' information. I find it incredible that large companies like Sony, Facebook, Google and recently, another large gaming company, can't keep their users' information secure. Don't they do penetration testing? I realise that it is impossible to think of every method that a hacker, or group of hackers might use, but surely there has to be an improvement in their penetration testing. Users' information must be protected. I'm sure that the above companies took the precautions they thought would be necessary to protect the information on their various servers and also to prevent intrusion by unauthorized personnel. However, I don't feel that they have done nearly enough. I don't play games on line, in fact, I rarely play computer games, but I sympathise with those individuals that had their identities compromised by a serious lack of security. These companies always trot out the usual, "we take the security of our users' personal information extremely serious". They obviously don't take it seriously enough! Years and years ago when I worked in the retail trade a manager of mine said that we should treat our customers as we ourselves would like to be treated. Perhaps Sony, Facebook and all the other companies who are playing fast and loose with our personal information would like to remember that!

The hackers themselves will probably get away with this, which I also find incredible in the twenty first century! The police don't seem to be interested in bring to justice the miscreants that perpetrate this sort of crime. Mind you, which particular police force will be tasked with finding the miscreants that did this. First, one has to find out which country the hack took place from. If and when that has been done the police force of the victims country then has to work with the police force of the hackers country. Some countries have a very lax view of internet security so might not be as thorough as they should be. Other countries are plain incompetent. Pakistan for instance, in not knowing that Osama Bin Laden had been living in their country for five years. Some countries are as corrupt as the criminal hackers so thy don't give damn. Perhaps it is easier to understand why the hackers will not be brought to justice, or if they are, the process could take years.

What shouldn't take years to fix is the lack of security by large corporations and also by small companies. Let's not just blame the multinationals here! I believe the problem is one of culture. If the message from the top of these companies to their employers was "we must treat other people's information as we would like ours to be treated by other companies" then things might change. One thing is certain, the senior management of major companies must, absolutely must start the ball rolling in the change of culture regarding their clients' personal information. The only way to make that happens is to make them responsible if things go wrong. In other words, after a major hack there should be a major change in senior management. Eventually the message will get down the company hierarchy and eventually things will change for the better.

People are the life blood of any company, either as employees or as customers. Therefore, people must come before profit and the security of people's information must come before anything else.

Finally, on April 17, the new coraXalia website went live. There have been a few tweaks since then, but I think it has finally settled down. We are waiting for the feed back now. The link is www.coraxalia.com

In the last blog I made mention of Google's new search system, called Panda, that has left some sites out of the search results. Some of these sites are well known. For instance, the new Panda Farmer Algorithm can reduce the hit rate by 50%. For more technical information go to this website:

In a nut shell, Google have decided not to include low quality websites in their search results. At this time it only applies to the United States. Google are trying to exclude sites that have nothing but links to websites. A sort of website farm. As previously mentioned, it is acting against low quality websites. I have included the following text from the above article by Mark Nunney:

1. A high % of duplicate content. This might apply to a page, a site or both. If it’s a site measure then that might contribute to each page’s evaluation.

2. A low amount of original content on a page or site.

3. A high % (or number) of pages with a low amount of original content.

4. A high amount of inappropriate (they don’t match the search queries a page does well for) adverts, especially high on the page.

5. Page content (and page title tag) not matching the search queries a page does well for.

6. Unnatural language on a page including heavy-handed on-page SEO (‘over-optimization’ to use a common oxymoron), e.g. unnatural overuse of a word on a page.

7. High bounce rate on page or site.

8. Low visit times on page or site.

9. Low % of users returning to a site.

10. Low click-through % from Google’s results pages (for page or site).

11. High % of boilerplate content (the same on every page).

12. Low or no quality inbound links to a page or site (by count or %).

13. Low or no mentions or links to a page or site in social media and from other sites.

That should give you some idea of the problems that website owners and administrators might have. The main problem has been certain unscrupulous site admins fiddling the search results unfairly. However, there has been complaints that the Panda Farmer roll-out has been too harsh. Lets hope common sense prevails. I for one don't like Google's condition of 'Low Quality' site. How is that measured? Surely, quality measurement is subjective. Although, having said that, there are ways to measure some sort of quality in websites. It shouldn't be based on low visit times. A website might a number of low visit times because the site wasn't what the visitors were look ing for. That can't be the fault of the website. I think the debate over Panda Farmer will rumble on.

Anyway we will all be plugging on. There is a major re-design of the aariviss website under way at the moment. The release date hasn't been set yet.

Well, this is the first blog of the aariviss website design company and as such it is a short resume of the company. We are based in southern Spain, near a town called Velez-Malaga, which in turn is about 36 Km or 22 miles from the city of Malaga itself. However, it doesn't matter where in the world you are or where your clients are. For that matter, it doesn't matter where our clients are, it's a world wide web.

We specialise in catering for businesses that don't have a large website or marketing budget, or for that matter don't have the time or resources in terms of staff to manage a website, never mind design one.

The company was started in 2006. Our first client was Buck Secretarial Services. Their proprietor and MD asked us to provide a simple small brochure website, which we did. The site has got larger and has been through several re-designs since 2006. Why not go and have a look at their site. On Sunday we have a new website going live for another client. We had been managing an existing site for them. We were very pleased to have been tasked with designing a new website. Roll on Sunday. I will report back on how the 'go-live' process went.

I will also comment on the Google Panda update to their search algorithm.
